In the Glory Days: 80's Rock 'n' Roll

The Glory Days: The 80's brought us such a variety of different genres of music, that it's difficult to condense an entire decade in a short article.

The two styles that burst on the scene were hard-core metal and glam rock, as well as punk (American and British).

Keep in mind, the world had been subjected to disco for most of the 70's.  The music world needed a change, and bands like Slayer, Iron Maiden and Van Halen, for example, led the rock renewal and punk offered 2 different, distinct sounds-the British invasion led by the Sex Pistols and GBH, while the U.S. rallied behind the Dead Kennedys, Fugazi and Bad Brains.

The 80's were a true Renaissance in music, showcasing amazing talent and giving birth to the iconic 'rock star'.  Also politics and social issues played a big part in both the rock and punk scenes.  It was an exciting time for the youth, as an outlet to teenage angst had arrived.

New words entered the world's vocabulary: head banging and mosh pits, etc. MTV made its debut, completely changing the way people 'looked' at music.

It was truly an exciting time when genres and sub genres sprouted up, filling the gaping hole that had been left in music.

The 80's also brought us 'the big show', as bands had gone to the next level with their often lavish, ridiculously large sets.  Ozzy was a great example of this.

Unfortunately, the good also came with bad. Read all about the negative aspects that rock & punk brought to the scene in the second installment of the Glory Days of 80's music.

Thanks for reading, and the second part of this article is soon forthcoming.

If it's too loud, you're to old!!  Rock on!
